For most people, their dream house is beautiful, calm, and warm. It is a place to recharge and retreat. It is a place of restoration. Unfortunately, not many people can say their home is all that. Our homes shape who we are. Our homes make us happy or unhappy. In Restoration House, home decor and lifestyle expert Kennesha Buycks takes us to a home that restores us — a home that goes beyond good-looking to life-bringing. Kennesha Buycks writes, “God has given us an eternal home in Him that will always be safe, but we also have homes here on earth. I believe our homes give us the unique opportunity to echo the healing, restoration, joy and redemption that our creator so lovingly and freely gives. If God has renewed our identity in Him, we can celebrate and reflect it in the place we call home.”
The story of Restoration House started when Kennesha Buycks planned to restore her island house after a few years of her marriage. Furnishing an island home can be very expensive. The less pricey options tended to be very tropical, which has never been her style. So being the resourceful girl that she is, she began shopping thrift stores for pieces she liked that others might overlook. She writes, “I knew that if I could pay a good price for them, I could turn them into pieces of beauty once again. And that is what I did.” Every piece of furniture she found and painted became another brick in the foundation of God’s healing and restorative power in my life. It might sound strange that restoring furniture led to God restoring me, but that’s what happened. She writes, “He [God] showed me that I have a gift for making things beautiful, and He used that gift to help me find His peace, His joy, and my identity in Him through the stripping down, sanding, painting and decorative detailing techniques. He used the gift He’d placed in me to heal my faded, cracked, and banged-up heart. Stripping off those layers of paint from the furniture, I felt the layers of pain and bumps and bruises being sanded away. I felt a new kind of freedom. It was as though for years someone had been holding their hand over my face, preventing full breathing, then all of a sudden, the hand lifted, and I could take in full breaths again.”
